What Is ASHRAE?
ASHRAE,
the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and
Air-Conditioning Engineers is an international organization
of 50,000 persons with chapters throughout the world. The
Society is organized for the sole purpose of advancing the
arts and sciences of heating, ventilation, air conditioning
and refrigeration for the public's benefit through research,
standards writing, continuing education and publications.
Through
its membership, ASHRAE writes standards that set uniform
methods of testing and rating equipment and establish
accepted practices for the HVAC&R industry worldwide,
such as the design of energy efficient buildings. The
Society's research program, currently more than 100 research
projects worth nearly $8 million, investigates numerous
issues, such as identifying new refrigerants that are
environmentally safe. ASHRAE organizes broad-based technical
programs for presentation at its semiannual meetings and
co-sponsors the International Air-Conditioning, Heating,
Refrigerating Exposition, the largest HVAC&R trade show
in North America.
ASHRAE Membership
Membership in ASHRAE, the American Society of
Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers, is
open to any person associated with heating, ventilation, air
conditioning or refrigeration through such disciplines as
indoor air quality and energy conservation, for example.
Membership in ASHRAE allows access to state-of-the-art
HVAC&R technology and provides many opportunities to
participate in the development of that technology.
Participation is available locally, through chapters, and
through membership on Society committees, such as standards
projects committees, which are responsible for the
development of standards, and technical committees which
advise the Society on research needs, emerging technologies,
and technical matters.
Technical education and information is the greatest
benefit of ASHRAE membership. Other benefits
include:
ASHRAE Handbooks - a 4-volume set
consisting of HVAC Applications, Fundamentals, HVAC Systems
and Equipment and Refrigeration, are the most widely cited
reference source for HVAC&R technology in the world. Every
year, ASHRAE members receive the newest ASHRAE Handbook (which
sells for $119) at no charge.
ASHRAE Journal - a monthly magazine,
reviews current HVAC&R technology of broad interest
through publication of application-oriented
articles.
ASHRAE Insights - a monthly newspaper,
provides news about ASHRAE at the chapter, region and Society
levels.
ASHRAE publications -- some 300
current titles -- which members are able to purchase at a 33%
discount.
ASHRAE educational products - ranging
from the Society's semi-annual conferences to home study
courses -- feature discounted registration prices for ASHRAE
